Hello there and welcome to my Lets Talk Managing Stress website.

Learning how to manage stress has been something that I needed to do over the past while. I have purchased numerous tapes, videos, books and courses in the Managing Stress world, both in the online world and in the offline world to try to improve my stress management skill sets as well as my overall approach to life.

Meet David

My name is David and in common with a lot of people I experience stress from time to time. In my experience of managing my stress I have learned different ways of managing stress. I experience stress less than I used to because I have learned how to manage this way better and proactively do so regularly.

This is working for me. I want now to make a positive difference to the world in the area of stress management. I have a mental image of people reading the content at this website and learning and using that content to manage their stress better and in that process improving their overall quality of life.

If you experience stress or any of its “cousins” (eg anxiety), I hope that you find the content here interesting, useful and helpful in your life. I hope that you reduce your stress and most importantly of all, I want you to be able to get on with the rest of your life having beaten stress or at least, having reduced your stress levels even just a little.

I have a sincere desire to live in a world where there is no or little “bad stress”. “Good stress” serves us in good ways so that is still required for our overall wellbeing. Some ways to manage stress require a regular time commitment (eg meditation) and some ways require implementing approaches when stressed (eg thinking when stressed “Will this be important in 5 years time?”).

I am hopeful that you using a number of different techniques to manage stress will help you in your life. I am hopeful that you learn or re-learn a number of different techniques that help you in your life.

Now, I am not going to claim that I know everything about stress. I do not. However I do know a lot about how stress affects me and how I manage it. I hope that some of the stress management techniques that I found practical, good and useful will also help you.

The one thing that all of these stress management products have in common is that they promise a lot. That is that your stress levels will disappear if you just follow their instructions. Well, speaking from my personal experience, I found that is not always true in my experience.

Maybe I am looking for too much. You see, I experience panic attacks and as a consequence of that, I fear that I will get another while driving on a motorway with no place to go should I get one. I had a horrible panic attack whilst driving on a motorway a while back. No physical damage was done. However I naturally fear another. As you know, not all motorways have a place where you can quickly pull over and stop. No book or course I have done so far, tells me how to manage that.

Of course, if you have a way that I could manage that, I would love to hear it. Let me know in the comments area below. Many thanks in advance for your help on this. 🙂

I experience panic attacks and to say in a course or a book or whatever that all you need to do is to “breathe deeply and slowly for a few minutes” and panic attacks will be gone I think is misleading people. There are a lot of opinions about how to manage panic attacks. At this stage, I have a plan that I follow when I get one and that approach works for me.

There are many different techniques about how to manage stress and the like. In my experience and in my opinion at this stage, it is a multi layered type of approach that needs to be followed on a regular basis, some of these techniques should ideally be done on a daily basis. Things like going for regular walks, eating well, getting enough quality sleep, doing meditation and getting enough water all help in their various ways.

Also applying some highly effective thinking on things can also help. When something “not great” happens, the human mind can end up doing a lot of “bad thinking” about the situation and make the situation way worst by continuously thinking about the “not great” situation.

I am aware of two different things that you can do in this situation which may help you:
1. Ask yourself “Will this be important in 5 years time?” If the answer is No, then simply say silently to yourself “Not important, moving on”.
2. You think of something “not great”, and you know that dwelling on it is “bad” for you, immediately after the thought appears, say to yourself as strongly as you can, “So what”.

Of course, these 2 approaches may help in a lot of case, however not all cases. I have tried them with my driving on motorways fear and to date, they have not worked for me. Those 2 approaches work great for me with other life experiences.

I am sure that there are many more things that a person can do, however as the two approaches mentioned above work for me some of the time, they may also work for you. 🙂

I have read books written by people in different lines of work including medical doctors and yes, they contain good advice and lots of interesting information. In a lot of cases, they contain a lot of practical information which can also help. By adapting wholeheartedly the provided information, it can help a lot in a lot of cases. Just knowing about the different approaches and not practicing them on a regular enough basis is not enough. Just my opinion. 🙂

I have panic attacks from time to time. At this stage, when I get one, I have a plan in place that I follow, I follow that and a while later I am in a position to move on and forget about it. This is something if you are a person who experiences panic attacks can do. This is one of those things that is actually easier to say than to do in the real world. However, it is possible, because that is what I do now and it helps a lot.

Of course, what I do and what you do may be quite different. Whatever works for you is what is important to you. I built up my plan over trial and error. Just because it works for me, does not immediately mean that it would work for you.

It may help you to know stress management techniques that I found useful, so that you can use them as a starting point for your list of stress management techniques.

What is even better is that you put stress management techniques in place and practice them on a regular basis.

Now I Want to Give Back

A Managing Stress TechniqueNow I want to give back so that you can benefit from my stress management journey.

Over a period of time I have learned quite a bit about stress management from the layman’s point of view. For instance, learning and practicing meditation on a daily basis can help. Doing meditation on a daily basis also has a number of other health related benefits, which is also good.

However, there are a number of different meditation techniques out there and different people say “My one is the best” (By the way, no way am I saying that my way is the best), so how can you narrow it down to the few that work for you… and I want to offer you some opinions about these as well as provide you with information on where to learn about some of these different techniques yourself, so that you decide for yourself which ones work best for you based on your real life experiences.

My Story

I experienced from stress for a while, and tried for a long time to remove the stress from my life by doing all those things people say you should do. You know, sleep better, eat better, go for 30-60 minute walks every day, de-stress and loads of other things. That did not really work for me until the main stressor was removed completely from my life. Once that was removed, then things started to improve.

How to Manage Stress Levels?

So how do you get to manage your stress levels in different ways that may be better. Well, I literally spent a lot of time reading different books, doing different courses, listening to different audio recordings, looking at videos and I have learned different things from these resources that have helped me to manage my stress levels. As well as doing these things, I have spent time following their suggestions and recommendations into my life.

Some approaches worked for me, whereas others didn’t. It could be that the ones that did not, just were not suitable for me and may work for you. However, I can not recommend the ones that did not work for me.

How to Manage Stress Better?

People are beginning to realize that stress has to be managed better.

Too much bad stress can affect your health. Stress needs to be managed well. There are numerous ways that people manage stress, and being aware of some of these ways can help you too, especially if you can integrate them into your daily life.

For instance, one technique is that if something annoys you, asking yourself silently the question “Will this be important in 5 years time?”. A lot of the times the answer will be No, therefore you say to yourself “Not important, moving on” and simply move on. You be surprised how effective that this one is.

And, you also see, how simple and obvious it is, once you realize that it can be used as a stress management technique.

Much of the content that I am going to be discussing here is going to be around simple practical techniques that can be used to help with stress management and I hope, will help you to reduce your stress levels. Some content will be reviews of products out there, that I hope you will also look at and buy to help you with your stress management.

  1. Hi David, I can relate to this . I have spent years trying all kinds of methods to combat stress. All kinds of exercises, physical, energy, spiritual practices, and many more. My takeaway from your most inspiring article is that the handling of stress boils down to what you believe about yourself and the situation. I liked that question as to whether the stressors will matter in a few years. Thank you !

      Glad that you liked my question about whether the things we are stressing about now will matter in a few years. This is a great technique to help manage stress. In my experience it works quite often, so is well worth knowing about.

    I enjoyed reading your article. I have heard mention of panic attacks but I’m still not sure exactly what it is, maybe because I have never suffered from having one.

    Reading your article, it appears it is brought about by the person being in a high state of worry and anxiousness which builds up, manifesting in the body which can cause a seizure of the body and mind; a locking up. If I am understanding correctly, you are saying it helps if one thinks in a more positive way and to practice relaxation techniques upon the feeling or worries about the onset of a possible attack that may or may not happen, and that it is brought about by negative thinking and fretting.

    You mentioned your main stressor which made me very curious to wonder what it was but as you didn’t mention it, I thought it might have been something quite personal.

    I think if more people were honest with themselves, they would admit to being stressed probably most of the time, although not to the point of suffering from a panic attack and I think your techniques would benefit everyone in handing their stresses a lot more better.

      Panic attacks are horrible. I hope that you never suffer from them. 

      The problem is that different forms of stress can manifest in different ways and if the stress stays around for a period of time, it can do damage in different ways. If stress is caused by say doing a job interview, than that stress in a lot of cases will simply disappear once the job interview is over. If stress is caused by something that hangs around for a long time, that the human body and mind is in a constant state of readiness or dread or fear, and it is that build up that can lead to stress related issues, including panic attacks.

      Once a person has had a panic attack, they tend not to want another one. So this leads to a fear of having another panic attack, which does not help the human body and mind. So doing a number of good things, for example, walking, having a good diet, getting enough quality sleep and meditation all help. Knowing about some CBT which is a thinking therapy also helps.

      I didn’t mention my main stressors because it is a combination of stressors that over time led to my panic attack. If I was practicing walking, having a good diet, getting enough quality sleep, meditation and some CBT, I might not have experienced that horrible panic attack.

      Prevention is better than cure they say, and with that in mind, I hope that people practice those things I mention and that they are better able to manage stress and hopefully better able to manage panic attacks should they get them. I hope that they do not get panic attacks.

    I believe we all manage stress differently, and each one of us has different methods to do it. What doesn’t help me, can work for you. It’s essential to try different ways and approaches to see what works best. But every situation is different and needs a different approach.
    Deep breathing is essential for stress management and for meditation as stress relief tool, but it’s not always working in every situation, especially if you experience a panic attack. Sorry to hear about that. When I was younger, I was very anxious, but luckily I wasn’t experiencing panic attacks.
    Meditation for me is the best tool to calm myself down when I feel stressed or worried. Of course, there are many things, that worked for me like being more positive.
    A healthy lifestyle is important too. If you do what you love, everything gets easier, and there is less stress in your life. I am speaking from experience.

      I agree with you that everyone manages stress in different ways. I think that it is important to know and practice on a regular basis a number of the stress management techniques that you have found over time that work for you. You might not think of them as stress management techniques but as things you do that help you to enjoy life more.

      In the middle of a panic attack, deep breathing may not always help. Although deep breathing may help to prevent it in the first place along with other things. In my opinion, in the middle of a panic attack, you need to get to somewhere where you can regain composure and ride it out. It will past. A major problem with panic attacks is that people can become afraid of experiencing more panic attacks which seem to strike out of the blue.

      There are many techniques out there that help. Meditation is one of them, especially if you are aware of a number of different meditation techniques. That way you can vary your meditation routine, although I understand that it is best to stick to one of the meditation techniques that you find particularly enjoyable and useful. That gives the most bang for your meditation according to a person I know that has been practicing meditation for a long time.

      Those other things you mentioned, being more positive and having a healthy lifestyle and so on are also important.
