Every time I hear about meditation and stress, I am reminded that meditation is a great way to reduce stress. Meditation is a brilliant technique that has so many benefits. Meditation can be used in stress management. Meditation can be used to relieve stress and anxiety. It is a wonder that more people are not actually doing it on a regular basis. Knowing how to meditate and actually practicing meditation on a daily basis is key. There are a number of different meditation types out there. Some people would learn one or two, and they may not like these one or two different meditation types, and so do not practice meditation and they do not get the benefits of meditation. Also different meditation techniques are effective at relieving stress and anxiety to different levels for different people, so knowing more of them and how effective you find them is important.

As there are loads of different techniques out there that are used in meditation, the problem becomes how can I learn in an effective and efficient manner a number of these techniques which I can use now?” I do not want to invest or waste time reading books that are full of theory and do not explain how to put such a such technique into use now. No doubt you are the same.

The main reasons why I do meditation every day, is to reduce stress and to reduce anxiety. The other benefits are the bonus benefits for me, so I think that it is time well spent.

6 tips to creating a regular meditation habit

Here are 6 tips if you want to create a strong meditation practice.

One, starting small is a great tip. It is better to start really small, so there is absolutely no excuse for you to skip your practice. For people just starting out, start out with 5 minutes a day and increase that by 1 minute per week, until you are practicing somewhere between 20 minutes and 60 minutes per day. The amount of time you put into your daily meditation practice is up to you. Whatever works for you.

According to the meditation gurus, doing meditation every single day for 5 minutes per day which is a total of 35 minutes per week is better for you, than doing meditation 2 or 3 days per week with a total of say 45 minutes per week.

Dr Harry Barry, author of the best selling book “Anxiety And Panic: How To Reshape Your Anxious Mind And Brain” outlines a 3 minute meditation session. His point is that you are more likely to do a 3 minute session rather than a 20 minute session every day and I agree with him. You can always find 3 minutes every day to do this 3 minute meditation session. Personally I have “mixed and matched” this 3 minute session with the information I learned in a meditation course which is outlined in more detail below, which works great for me.

Two, recommitting is a great tip. This is where at the end of every session, commit to show up for your practice the following day.

Three, adapting the mantra “Never zero” is a great tip. This means that every day you will practice, even if only 5 minutes. Make it a non-negotiable part of your life. I have found that weekend days I usually practice later in the day then for a weekday. However, that is me. Because of the never zero guideline, I now practice meditation every single day, there are no exceptions. Some days, it may only be for 1 minute. My daily average is actually 32 minutes every single day, including Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holidays and vacation days. So not bad. 🙂

Four, having no expectations is a great tip. Nothing kills motivation quicker than unmet expectations. Although you should start to benefit from meditation after doing it every day for a few weeks, know that most of the benefits from meditation come only after months or years of daily practice. So letting go of expectations sounds like a smart strategy. In any case, I enjoy my meditation time.

Five, being prepared is a great tip. Sometimes you will feel tired, busy, or “not in the mood”. This is a human thing, so just accept it. Be mentally prepared to meet those challenges with the “never zero” idea, and do the practice no matter what. Just do it.

At this stage, if I am really busy, I have a 3 minute meditation session sometime during the day. I can always get at least one 3 minute meditation session in during those type of days.

Six, having a joyful attidude is a great tip. Meditation is not a task, but a precious moment to go deep inside yourself. Enjoy the practice, and it will be easy to keep it up. Hopefully these tips can be helpful in your journey.

So you would need a way to integrate meditation into your daily life, learn and do a few different types of meditation, and build up your new daily habit from a short 2 minute session on day 1, to over the length of the course, to 15 minute session. The Master Your Mind – Beginner course ticks all of these boxes or at least it did and does for me.

If you are looking for an easy and effective way to learn and practice meditation this course is for you. In this course you will learn how to meditate to relieve stress and anxiety. This course will most likely help you in reducing your stress levels. You learn about a number of different meditation techniques. You also learn and practice your own meditation habit. By the end of the course, if you follow the instructions, you will have practiced a few different meditation techniques, know which ones you prefer and will have started to build up your meditation daily habit. All good.

The five different meditation types covered in this course cover the following types of meditation:-

  • Breathing Deeply
  • Breath Awareness
  • Mantra Meditation
  • Chakra Meditation
  • Loving-Kindness

Of course, you may not know what each and every one of these meditation techniques now. That is okay, I was in the same boat before I did this course. They are covered in the course, so by the time you finish the course, you know each of these techniques and you will have practiced each of these techniques.

In late 2016, I came across the Master Your Mind – Beginner course which is a 5 week course, where some different meditation types are outlined and you are given guidance on these different meditation types. I personally did this Master Your Mind – Beginner Course in late 2016 and thanks to it, and my will-power and determination, I have been practicing meditation every consecutive day since then. My thinking is, if I can do it so can you. 🙂

For instance, the introduction and day 1 of the Master Your Mind – Beginner course, covers some important points, however by the end of day 1 of the course, you will have completed a short meditation session and will be well on the way to building up your new daily meditation habit. And the important thing is, is that the actual time investment is not really that much, so you can get on with the rest of your life. 🙂

My #1 recommendation on meditation is to do the Master Your Mind – Beginner course which has been developed by a Meditation Teacher who is very passionate and committed to meditation himself. This particular course covers different meditation techniques and provides information on how to build a daily habit, in this case, doing meditation every day.

What does the course cover? (Including a diagram overview)

This is technically an online course which is 5 weeks in length. I say technically because it has been designed so that you spend some time on it on a daily basis and technically you do over 35 consecutive days. However the great advantage with it, is that you do it when you can, so it may take longer than the designed 5 weeks, but so what, once you buy the course, you have lifetime access to the course.

A lot of ground is actually covered in this course. This course is logically split up into 5 weeks. Each week is of course split up into 7 days. Over 5 weeks, the course covers a number of important topics to provide you with enough practical information so that you can start doing meditation on a daily basis at your own pace and in such a way that learning building blocks are used.

At the end of day 1, you are invited to perform a 2 minute meditation session after being given guidance. At the end of day 35, you are invited to perform a 15 minute meditation session after being given guidance earlier in the course.

The course covers at least 5 different meditation techniques. Don’t worry, you are given guidance on how to do each of these 5 different meditation techniques during the course. The course now also contains a number of guided meditation sessions, which you can use or not. Some people like them, some do not. I find them helpful, however not essential.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who wants the benefits that meditation can bring would benefit from this course. Although the title of the course suggests that it is for beginners, even people who have practiced meditation on and off for a while would benefit from this course, along with people who only use one or two meditation techniques. This course covers five different meditation techniques. If you practiced meditation earlier, it is possible that one or more of these five different meditation techniques would suit you way better.

My pros of the course

The course has been developed by a Meditation Teacher who is very passionate and committed to meditation himself. He has a good style in delivering the information so that you learn quickly and well.

The course is accessible online, you simply log on anytime to do the online course. You are not limited to when you can access the course content or if you are, I personally have never being unable to access the site, although I am sure that it may from time to time be unavailable for routine maintenance and the like.

You can also download resources for most, if not all, of the lessons. Examples include PDF files and audio recordings. So you can refer to this information when you are offline. This also means, that you are less dependent on actually being able to access the course content online interactively. I have never been unable to access the course content online interactively, so this for me is not a problem.

By the time you have completed the course, you will have learned and practiced a number of different meditation techniques. And once you purchase the course, you have lifetime access to it so you can do “refreshers” as and when you wish to, if you want to. I have done “refreshers” of specific days of the course myself. I have also done a “refresher” of the whole course myself. I picked up some things on the second pass that I missed on the first pass. Guess that is part of learning and doing.

I really love the idea that the course is self-paced.

You do the course at your own pace. For instance, you could decide to do each day twice, as you want the information to sink in. In this case, the designed 5 week course becomes a 10 week course. In this case, you do each “day” twice, before going to the next day. No big deal. You do the course at your own pace.

My cons of the course

Meditating Outside To Manage Stress

There are a few minor cons that I noticed when I was doing this course.

This does require some commitment, time and effort at your end to implement some of the stuff you learn. Like a lot of things in life, if you do not put in the commitment, you do not get the benefits. 🙂

The instructor recommends in the first few days to do the course every day, with no excuses and no let-up. When he makes this recommendation, I thought to myself “Another thing that I have to do everyday”. However, I completed the course, everyday for about 5 weeks with no let-up (I was thrilled about that). So not really a con when I look back.

Why I recommend the Master Your Mind – Beginner course

The instructor clearly explains how to create a new daily habit, in this case doing meditation every single day. The process outlined in this course really works. I know this because I did it.

Meditation can help in reducing stress. Over 580 days ago I knew next to nothing about meditation. At that time, I was under a lot of stress and had experienced a severe panic attack earlier, not including the “minor” ones I had experienced earlier. I also have a heart condition which is being managed by a specialist heart clinic for me, so of course, having a lot of stress, experiencing severe panic attacks and having migraines all added up in an “unwanted” way.

One of my brothers suggested that I give meditation a go. I did some research and found this course. I liked what I read so I decided to give it a go.

Well that was over 580 days ago. In this course, I learned how to meditate, I learned the importance of doing it every day, and I learned a number of different meditation techniques. I have now done meditation for over 580 consecutive days in a row, no let up, not even for Sundays, Saturdays or holidays. Knowing a number of different meditation techniques means that I can switch from one technique to another quite easily. I even did a refresher of this course a while back to reinforce and to deepen my meditation practices. That was also time well spent. I picked up some things that I missed on the “first pass”.

If stress is part of your life right now and meditation is not, I would suggest that you learn meditation to see if meditation can help you to reduce your stress. Ideally in order to give you the best chance of a good outcome, I would suggest that you do this course, as you will learn meditation from the ground up and get a pretty good grounding in a relatively short period of time. The course is very practical and you learn some theory as well. In my opinion, the practical aspects are where you start to get the benefits of meditation. Knowing a lot of theory and no practical implementation of that theory is not the best use of your time. So doing this course, learning some theory and then doing the practical implementation of that is extremely useful and of real value to you. This should help to reduce stress and meditation becomes part of your normal daily routine.

I recommend this course without hesitation. I think that this course helped me to calm down and I think that I am also sleeping better. I am more relaxed now than I was over 580 days ago for sure. Of the meditation techniques that are explored in the course, I like the Loving Kindness meditation technique the most, followed by the breathing meditation techniques that are explored and practiced during the course.

    Hi David, nice article. Your in-depth analysis of meditation is truly superb. I used to practice meditation a long time ago like in my teens and couldn’t get the focus or the rhythm that would’ve helped me master the “art”. I always felt frustrated because I wanted to really unlock some mental doors in my mind via meditation and I just always felt like it was harder than it really was.

    Your article is and would be a great benefit to anyone who is looking to meditate and master everything they need to gain that focus which is something I felt I always lacked. Interestingly, I still do meditation every now and then but not as often as I like.

    My question, can meditation really be used to open doors in your mind so as to unlock mental abilities or how does that work?

    My second question, what motivated you to take up meditation; was there a time in your life when you felt it was really necessary?

      This Master Your Mind – Beginner course has been designed to overcome some of the problems that people who take up meditation face. It is interesting to note the problems you faced, some if not all of which this course actually covers.
       
      The instructor spends some time in the early parts of this course providing guidance on how to set this up as a daily habit. Based on actually doing the course, I know that this process works, because I have done meditation for every single day for the last 13 months plus. This course also covers a few different meditation techniques so that you have your favourite meditation techniques, which are the ones you would typically continue meditating with.

      For instance, it would be a real shame to learn just one meditation technique, which you did not like and not do meditation again. So in this course you learn a few and actually practice each of these for a few days each. By doing this, you should find at least one of them that you like and this helps you to keep going.

      Regarding your first question, Meditation has loads of benefits. These include but are not limited to:-

      • Less Stress
      • More Well-being
      • Less Anxiety

      Regarding your second question, I took up meditation to help me manage my stress and anxiety. Without meditation, I do not know where I would be today.

      Like you, I became a true believer in meditation from my own experience with it. It is a great way to master your mind and body over time. This beginners course covers advise and suggestions on how to build a new daily habit, which in this case is doing meditation every day. It starts off on day 1 with a 2 minute session (no hanging around) and on the last day of the course (day 35) that is up to a 15 minute session. 

      The course says it is a beginners course, however by the end of it, you will have practiced at least 5 different meditation techniques. Some people who are experienced meditators have only done 1 or 2 different meditation techniques. By doing a number of them, you know which ones are more suited to you and those are the ones you continue on with.

      The beginners course also includes a number of guided meditation sessions, you can download the audios from the course ‘student area’ to your pc, laptop, tablet or smartphone or whatever. And listen to it whenever you like. No recurring subscriptions or anything like that. 

      The course itself is an in-depth course on meditation. It is a lot more than an introductory course. Both beginners and intermediate-level meditators benefit from this course. Although I did the course over a year ago, I did it again and completed another 35 days, I found that I learned new insights and got more out of it. Again.     Wow, this is an awesome guideline!

    Your entire website caught my attention, because struggle with severe anxiety. I have difficulty keeping my mind under control, and have experienced a lot of panic attacks. This is frustrating because I also have a lot of ambitious goals that I don’t want to give up, and this is sometimes at war with my mental health and stress levels.

    I’ve only turned to yoga once so far. It was Restorative Yoga, and it helped me a ton. I need to practice it more regularly, I was attending a class at the time. What do you recommend specifically for people with anxiety disorders?

      Hi Jordan,

      I can only speak from my own experience of managing my stress and my anxiety. I have found that knowing and practicing a number of different techniques when necessary helps a lot. 

      I have now practiced meditation every day for almost 2 years, ranging in length from about 1 minutes to over 2 hours per day. The over 2 hours per day would be a number of different meditation sessions during the day. 

      I also walk on a regular basis and read novels for enjoyment most days now. Different techniques are necessary in my opinion because there is not as far as I know a “one size works for all people all of the time” solution. So you need to be curious and try out different experiments, find out different techniques, do the ones that you resonate with, “keep” the ones that you find useful and keep learning/doing the techniques that help you.

      For people with anxiety disorders I recommend a number of different ideas:

      1) Bookmark this site and explore this site in great detail. I have a number of different ideas and techniques which they may find of practical use. See here.

      2) Learn how to meditate as meditation has a number of benefits which helps with anxiety disorders. See here and here.

      3) Learn more about how the human brain works with anxiety. Knowing this will at least help a bit. See here for a review of an applicable book. 

      4) It is possible that your doctor and other medical professionals may be able to help so consider what they recommend. For instance my doctor has me on a small medical dose which seems to be helping. A colleague of his recommended I see a counsellor as well, so I did for a while. I stopped that after 5 visits because I felt it was not helping. I wrote a post of that experience here.

      As you found yoga helpful, consider taking it up a bit more. 

      And you need to be kind to yourself, giving yourself as much time and space that you need. Meditation helps you with this process.

    Thanks for the great article! As someone that practices meditation once in a while, it was a good insight for me. I think mastering one’s mind is the most important thing in life and so many people don’t seem to even care about it. It’s good that you have this article up, so it allows more people to realize the importance of meditation. 

    One of the big issues I find with meditation is the commitment. You talk about it here as well – but how do you recommend people learn to be disciplined to stick with the meditation routine? I know I find myself in a place where I skip meditation days for weeks and months just because I feel that I don’t have time to do so.

      Hi Parmi,

      I am thrilled to hear that you practice meditation. I notice that you mention a potential issue with meditation is getting the time to do it, ideally if possible on a daily basis. One of the topics on this particular online course about meditation is learning about practical ideas and techniques that are designed to explain how on a practical basis how to build a new daily habit.

      These include doing the new habit, meditation in this case, for a small period of time, just a few minutes, and then over time, gradually and if you want to, to increase by one minute the time spent on it per day on a weekly basis. By building this gradually, you get used to doing it.

      Another idea is to try to do it the same time in the same place every day after doing something you currently do. This allows your body to become used to it. For instance, if you do it every day after brushing your teeth in the morning, you will after a while just almost automatically do it.

      Another idea is to know and practice short meditation sessions. I have learned a 3 minute unguided meditation session which gives me this flexibility. I learned a three minutes unguided meditation session in the “Anxiety And Panic: How To Reshape Your Anxious Mind And Brain” book (See my review here) and in the “Mindfulness – A Practical Guide To Finding Peace In A Frantic World” book (See my review here).

      Another option is to use the Insight Timer App which I reviewed here. They have guided meditation sessions that are less than 5 minutes. They also have guided meditation sessions that are a lot longer!

      This course I recommend can be done by people with no or some or a lot of meditation experience. One of the things I got from it was the importance of doing meditation every day along with practical advice on how this could be achieved. It must be working, as I have now done meditation every day for over 700 days in a row now!

    I have been a student of meditation for some time now, and it has pretty much saved my life.  The stress of a seventy hour work week will kill you if you can’t find a way to release your stress.  I was in a course last year, and I was doing well into my third week, but then we had a death in the family and got out of the habit of going.

      Yes, with this online meditation course, you can continue on from where you stopped within this online meditation course.

      I do not know how it would differentiate from say the course that you were physically going to last year. One difference is that this course is online. You can do it anytime anywhere (assuming all well with the applicable computers and with network connections). I have never had an issue connecting to the course once I got online.

      This course I recommend can be done by people with no or some or a lot of meditation experience. Once you purchase the course, you can access it online and do separate sessions as often as you like.

      I re-did the course again at the start of 2018. I did the course the first time in late 2016. You can also download course materials to your machine so that you have the content there. It includes a few guided meditation sessions, so it makes sense to have those audio files on your machine. Of course, I do some of these guided meditation sessions from time to time as they are on my laptop.

I clicked through to the 70 benefits of meditation and it’s unimaginable that the regular health care isn’t recommending this more often. They rather prescribe a pill, than that they admit that meditation could help too. I do meditate every morning and evening, and I am healthy, energetic and stress free:)

    This looks like a great course to try. The only thing that worries me is remembering to put time aside each day in order to do this. I often buy courses with all good intentions but never end up putting them to practice regularly  enough. 

    I have tried meditation and I must say it is not as easy as it looks. I find it so incredibly difficult to clear my mind and concentrate on one thing only. The best method for me was definitely mantra meditation because by saying something over and over helps to rid your mind of other thoughts more easily. 

    Breathing and thinking about the air you are breathing also help, but again I only manage this type of concentration for about two minutes max. But I guess something is better than nothing.

      This is a great course to try out. The instructor of this course includes great practical advice on how to add doing meditation every day to your daily schedule. At this stage for me, following this great practical advice, I am pleased to say that I have now done meditation for over 725 days in a row. One day at a time thing.

      The course itself is divided up into daily sessions that should not take too long to do each day. You can of course, break up the daily sessions so that you do a daily session over a number of days. You move at your own pace and you do the course when you can, although it is hoped that you do it every day. A thing called Life sometimes gets in the way. You simply continue on when you can. No outside pressures for you to continue.

      Over the course of this course, you learn a number of different meditation techniques so that you are better placed to determine which ones you like the best. Personally I found the chakra meditation techniques as taught on this course challenging so I simply do not use those techniques as taught on that course now. I might in the future, but not now. Mantra meditation, loving-kindness meditation and breathing meditation are ones I like and practice on a regular basis, although not in any particular order.

      This course also contains a guided mediation session for each of the meditation techniques taught on the course, which helps to learn how to do them and helps to increase the amount of time you spend on your meditation practice.
